President's Message
Gandi said: Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were
to live forever. The great thing about the training profession is that it
is all about learning: facilitating learning for others and lifelong
learning for ourselves - how lucky we trainers are! Of course some are
luckier than others, for example, the fortunate ten who won gift
certificates simply for turning in their membership surveys! If you
haven't already done so, do check the newsletter above to see if your
raffle ticket number is one of the lucky winners. Prizes will be handed
out at our next membership meeting, which is our first luncheon this year
and being held at Café de Thai on the 21st of the month from 11:30 am to 1
pm.
Don't forget to RSVP for the luncheon by emailing Cheryl Woehr at
cwoehr@unr.edu, as the restaurant would like to know how many attendees
will be coming. Maureen Orey, ASTD Regional Area Manager for the Western
States will be speaking, and there will be plenty of opportunities for
networking, so don't miss this event!
To come back to the membership survey for a moment, many thanks to all
who participated. We were very pleased with the response and are now in
the process of evaluating your feedback, and it appears that there is
demand for several luncheon meetings a year, so we'll be expecting a good
turnout on the 21st. A full report on the survey results is still
forthcoming!
I'll be looking forward to seeing you all at Café de Thai, and I leave
you with a final quote: The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher
explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires. -
William Arthur Ward. Go forth and inspire! ---Shelley MacDonald,
President, Sierra Nevada Chapter

Principles for Effective E-Learning |
 |
By Zoraini Wati Abas, New Straits
Times (Malaysia) (07/28/03) P. 39 Dr. Ruth Clark, an instruction
design and technical training specialist, lists six factors she
believes are essential when developing e-learning courses. The six
principles she supports are multimedia, contiguity, coherence,
modality, redundancy, and personalization.
The multimedia principle encourages the use of graphics and video
to enhance learning, while the contiguity principle advises that
text placed near graphics will help learning as well. The modality
principle advocates using audio to explain the graphics, and
redundancy supports the idea that presenting the same information in
multiple forms will help facilitate learning. The coherence
principle warns against using too much text or graphics that are not
needed, suggesting that these add-ons can distract and hinder
learning. The principle of personalization is the belief that using
conversational tones when writing text or recording audio will allow
the user to engage better with the material, whereas more formal
language may not work as well.---Julie Lamoureaux and Jeanne

Book Review: The Power of Full Engagement |
 |
"Managing Energy, Not Time, Is the Key to High Performance
and Personal Renewal" by Jim Loehr and Tony Scharwtz
"We live in digital time. Our rhythms are rushed, rapid fire and
relentless, our days carved up into bits and bytes. We celebrate
breadth rather than depth, quick reaction more than considered
reflection. We skim across the surface, alighting for brief moments
at dozens of destinations but rarely remaining for long at any one.
We race through our lives without pausing to consider who we really
want to be or where we really want to go. We're wired up but we're
melting down."
When I read this first paragraph of the first chapter, I knew the
authors were on to something. The frantic pace of modern everyday
life as I've seen it in cities like San Francisco, Chicago, Seattle
and Reno, and living that lifestyle myself, I had always thought
effectively managing my time was the key to optimization, economy of
effort and finding a balance in my life. It never occurred to me
that mismanaging my energy was a major contributing factor to my
personal and professional performance levels.
The authors state: Energy, not time, is the fundamental currency
of high performance. Performance, health and happiness are grounded
in the skillful management of energy. They ascribe to four primary
principles: ˇ Full engagement requires drawing on four separate but
related sources of energy: physical, emotional, mental and
spiritual. ˇ Because energy diminishes both with overuse and with
underuse, we must balance energy expenditure with intermittent
energy renewal. ˇ To build capacity we must push beyond our normal
limits, training in the same systematic way that elite athletes do.
ˇ Positive energy rituals - highly specific routines for managing
energy- are the key to full engagement and sustained high
performance. This book takes the reader through the fundamentals of
the Corporate Athlete Training System, using case studies to give
context of the learning points. There is a complete summary of the
program at the end. This book reads fast, but the wisdom offered
cannot be disputed. The authors are simply taking what they have
learned as performance enhancement consultants to elite athletes in
multiple sports and translating those lessons to Joe and Jane
Average. If producing optimal results and the pursuit of personal
and professional excellence are anywhere in your lists of desires,
this book is for you. ---Chris Champagne
