Games and Ice Breakers with Barbara Millis Wednesday August 17th, 2005 at Washoe Medical Center's Remedies Meeting Rooms at 75 Pringle Way from 5:30pm - 7:00p.m. Games can be an effective way to help workshop participants/trainees to learn content material; to engage their interest, and to assess their learning. However, too often people come away with the idea that their time was wasted because games are often merely "icebreakers" or "team building" activities unrelated to content. The two games modeled during this interactive session focus squarely on learning academic content. The presenter will discuss other gaming options along with a bit of gaming theory. President's Message from Chris Champagne
It's hard to believe that summer is almost over and school is about to start. My summer started with my trip to Yosemite in May, followed quickly by ICE in June, and July just sort of blended right on by. There's a lot to catch up on, so I'll get right to it. First off, through a set of strange circumstances and bureaucratic glitches, it seems that I am still part of the US Army in spite of the fact that I got out 9 years ago. The punch line is that I am currently an Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) soldier, and that I could be deployed anywhere t any time. To get ahead of an all expense paid trip to Iraq or Afghanistan, I will mostly likely join an active reserve unit so that I can finish out the few months remaining on my service contract and figure things out from there. My intent is to deal with that in early 2006, as circumstances allow. I'm fine with it, ...and it's kind of funny. But I just wanted everyone to know just in case my name becomes "Lucky Winner." (Besides, its great excuse to continue slimming down.) Second, in September you'll be getting a mailing on a new Board slate, membership rates and proposed by- law changes. In regards to the new 2006 Board, we have the following openings: President-Elect, VP's of: Administration, Treasurer, Communications (Web site and Newsletter), Membership, Marketing and Director at Large. These volunteer positions usually take about 10 hours a month to fulfill job duties, and we'd love to bring new blood to the Board. So, if you're interested, please give me a call at 775-233-2073 or email me at chris.champagne@igt.com so we can get your name on the slate. Don't be shy! Third, it looks like we're going to be putting together an event in December, details of which will come out early next month. We're still in the early planning stages, but we just wanted everyone to know we will have a 2005 seminar event. The topic is looking around the issue of proving worth and business acumen for HR and Training professionals. So enjoy the rest of summer and see you at the meeting! Chris
