  • Greetings!

MEMBERSHIP INCENTIVES! Many people who should be enjoying the benefits of ASTD membership are not. We are asking for your help. Bring a guest to a meeting, and when that guest becomes a member, you get a $10 COUPON FROM ONE OF OUR LOCAL MERCHANTS, SUCH AS BORDERS, STARBUCKS AND TRADER JOE'S.

This edition of the newsletter introduces your board members and provides a preview of what's in store this year.

    President's Letter, January 2004

2004 is here, the 60th anniversary of ASTD as an organization! In those 60 years ASTD has evolved from its early establishment by a handful of "training men" to being the premier global workplace learning and performance organization!

The Sierra Nevada Chapter of ASTD is also striving to be an outstanding organization of choice for its members and potential members. The 2004 Board of Directors recently sat down together at our yearly planning retreat to assess the successes (or otherwise) of 2003 and to define who we are and where we want to go in 2004. The results of that meeting can be reviewed on our web site www.astdnevada.org under "Membership Services", the same location where you can find current contact info for the new 2004 Board (contact us with your ideas, please!)

But just in case you don't feel like checking out the web site right now, I'll just mention a few points that came out of that session: We asked "What is our Chapter identity?" "Who are we?" and the answer we came up with is: We are Northern Nevada professionals that partner with industry and individuals to provide training resources, training expertise, performance support, networking and professional development. Is that how you see our organization too? In line with this assertion we pledged to uphold our mission statement, developed in 2001: We are committed to enhancing and facilitating the development and leadership of individuals involved in Training and Human Resources. We further identified our main customers as being the area's consultants, corporate trainers, sister organizations, government, adult educators, designers/developers, SMEs and ad hoc trainers. Do you find yourself in that group? Then we asked what the needs of our customers are and came up with the following needs: networking for profit, tangible benefits of membership, socializing, field credibility, benchmarking, resources, and education. Do you see these areas as being the reason you are a member of our Chapter? And finally, we set broad goals for 2004, examples of which are: increasing our membership by 30%, enhancing our marketing outreach, offering two mixers (similar to the wine and networking event last November) and two luncheon meetings besides our other programs, as well as becoming 100% compliant with CORE (Chapter Operating Requirements), guidelines for all chapters to follow, set down by ASTD National.

What other goals would you like to see us fulfill in 2004?

    The rest of the story...

Vice President of Marketing and President Elect
Greetings from your Vice President of Marketing and this year's President Elect. The latest Board retreat showed us that we need to tune in more precisely to our membership needs, first by identifying WHO you are, WHY you're a local member and WHAT you'd like from us. So expect more questions in the near future. (I might even give it a snazzy marketing moniker like "No Member Left Behind...") At the same time, we're identifying and communicating to those professionals in our area that we think could and should be members, plus seeking alliances with sister organizations to leverage resources and contacts. My philosophy is that if you are a training and development professional in this area, you need to be a member of this chapter, plain and simple. I see you, the members, as our biggest marketing asset, so let me know what I can do to help you recruit, retain and get the word out about our chapter.

Looking forward to a dynamic and prosperous 2004! Chris

    VP of Administration
Jeanne Underwood is the owner of Sierra Performance Consultants, an organization that assists organizations in enhancing leadership, improving performance, and increasing knowledge & innovation in the workplace. As VP of Administration she intends to keep accurate records for the chapter, insure compliance with the National chapter, and assist the chapter in continuing to establish a solid presence in the community as the most advanced and effective organization for training professionals.

    Director at Large
Kurt Frohlich - Director at Large Hello and happy 2004! This year, I am one of two Directors at Large after serving last year in the same capacity. In this position I will be responsible for managing or co-managing at least one ASTD event during the 2004 calendar year. Last year, I was responsible for managing our First Annual ASTD e- Learning Symposium held at Truckee Meadows Community College. This year, we are currently in the early strategy and planning stages for holding a possible Second Annual E-Learning Symposium, or merging that event with an advanced Train the Trainer or other regional conference hosted by our local chapter. Stay tuned for more details as they unfold. Professionally, I am an independent training consultant working with public and private sector clients who hire me to design and develop training materials for classroom and/or online delivery. My company's name is Apex Performance Solutions (www.solutionsbyapex.com).

    VP Membership
I'm Beth Blackwood, VP of Membership/Recruitment for 2004. I served on the board last year as the VP Membership. I'm the Training Manager at West Corporation, an Inbound call center. Aside from work, I also have a real life. With my husband, twin daughters in High School and ten year old son, we've been in Reno for 3.5 years.

My goal this year is to grow our membership and add to the diversity of the businesses we serve. It's important that we expand our membership so that our organization reflects the new and changing business mix here in Northern Nevada. We also want to support the traditional business and industry sectors that have been responsible for our on-going success.

To accomplish my goals, I'll be asking for your help in 2004. We'll be running an incentive program to increase our membership, which will reward our current members for bringing in new members. It's not difficult to contribute to this effort... just tell professionals you know why you enjoy being a part of our local ASTD.

Ask your boss to join us at the January meeting. Or bring a friend! If your boss is a friend, then we'll need your input on the "building relationships" meeting later this year!

    Vice President
Greetings and happy new year! My name is Cheryl Woehr and I have been elected to the ASTD Board as the Vice President.

For Speaker and Monthly Program Coordination. I am responsible for coordinating guest speakers and monthly activities. If you have ideas for guest speakers or activities I'd like to hear them!

In addition to being on the board, I am the IBET, (Intercultural Business Education & Training) Program Coordinator at the University of Nevada, Reno. The IBET program provides cultural sensitivity and diversity training to local businesses and organizations in the Northern Nevada area. Prior to working at UNR, I worked for Truckee Meadows Community College for 18 years and have been providing consulting and training in the area for the past 15 years.

    Treasurer
Julie Lamoureaux - Treasurer Hi Everyone! I am the incoming Treasurer, filling the shoes of Cheryl Hinman who held this position last year. As the Treasurer I am responsible for handling accounts payable/receivable, reconciling bank statements and preparing monthly finacial reports for the Board - among other things. My goals for this year are to continue to maintain the great records Cheryl kept and to see our chapter through an external audit. I joined ASTD in July and lo and behold in September I was talking to Shelly about becoming a Board member. I am excited to hold this position and I know I will enjoy working with our knowledgable team of Board members. I currently work for Nevadaworks as a Project Analyst. In this capacity I oversee numerous contractors whose programs we fund under the Workforce Investment Act. I look forward to seeing and talking to you at our monthly membership meetings!

    Past President
I have just passed on to Shelley MacDonald the responsibility and pleasure of being the President of this Sierra Nevada Chapter of ASTD. When I moved to Reno from Hong Kong in 1998 I joined the chapter to connect professionally. I became a Director-at-Large in 1999 and was elected President-Elect in 2000 and held that position for two years. During that time I served as acting president for the last six months of John Burrel's two year term as President. As Past President my role will be to provide continuity and wisdom from the past as we reposition our chapter to effectively serve northern Nevada in the 21 Century at a time when the training and human resource professionals are becoming strategic business partners in organizations. Professionally, through my business, Sierra Circle Consulting, I work with management teams to develop and implement strategies that create a quantum leap forward in effectiveness and productivity for their organization through facilitated structured workshops, planning forums, and training in facilitative leadership skills required in participatory organizational cultures and collaborative projects.
