Wednesday, Sept 17th 5:30 pm Networking, 6:00 pm Presentation Room 108,
Washoe Professional Building, 75 Pringle Way
Join Pat Lees, Dean of Instruction, Western Nevada Community College
for "Humps, Hurdles, and Hazards:Handling the Worst Moments in Training"
Come share experiences and learn techniques for turning training
disasters into successes. See how your fellow trainers handled
interruptions, changes, and problems on their feet! Pat Lees, new Dean of
Instruction at Western Nevada Community College in Carson City, will
facilitate an enjoyable, and sometimes humorous, session of group
discussion and small group interaction to give you strategies for creating
positive outcomes from challenging situations.
Pat has been involved in public speaking - and singing solos! - since
the age of three, and brings an extensive training background to her role
as facilitator for our meeting. She/we are asking you to write up a short
paragraph about one or more of your more memorable or challenging training
experiences - a surprising event or circumstance with people, logistics,
etc. that you handled well, or wish you had handled well - that other
trainers may appreciate or learn from. Whether you chose to share your
experiences or learn from listening to others, we hope you will
participate in the fun that this topic is bound to generate! CORRECTED

The ASTD Sierra Nevada Chapter is looking for a member with a
desire to serve as Webmaster / Newsletter VP on the 2004 Board of
Directors. Formerly two separate positions, they have been combined
into one, now that our newsletter has gone electronic in 2003!
Catherine King, our current Webmaster, has done an absolutely
awesome job getting both the web site and the electronic version of
the newsletter up and running. Taking this position over now will be
a piece of cake, at least for someone who possesses a working
knowledge of one of the following areas: web design, HTML, or web
design software.
This is a great opportunity to serve on a FUN Board that is
planning super events for our members and our community for the
coming year of 2004. If you would like more info, contact Catherine
King, Webmaster, at catherine.king@igt.com or Shelley MacDonald,
President-Elect, at:
It's easy to point fingers at people in these traditional
hierarchical and bureaucratic organizations. Well, how about
behaviors closer to home? How about in our own traditional,
hierarchical companies, families, communities? Aren't these kinds of
behaviors familiar to us? How often do we not risk looking bad to
our boss, or spouse? How often do we fail to speak up about
something because we "don't want to hurt their feelings?" How often
do we let something pass without comment because it's now out of our
area of responsibility and into someone else's hands? How often do
we decide not to comment on some conversation or action that we
question because it would risk our job security? Or our relationship
security?
Truth telling is one of the hardest skills I've tried learning.
MORE » The momentum is rolling!!! At our August luncheon we had several
new visitors and we've also had new members joining. The larger our
organization the more we benefit and have to offer.
In October you will be receiving an invoice for your 2004
membership along with an invitation to attend our annual November
Wine Tasting event. Please remember that if you pay your membership
fee at the November meeting, you can enjoy the wine tasting at no
cost. If you're unable to join us in November you can always mail in
your registration.
See you at the September meeting! Beth Blackwood
Your memory plays a critical part in the effectiveness of your
training. Do you remember your participants' names easily? Do you
remember the flow and content of your presentation without having to
continually review your notes? Do you remember the funny stories and
tidbits that can add humor and insights to your core content? If
your memory is slipping from constant use like mine, please come
join us for a unique and fun presentation on "Memory Tricks &
Tips". Allison Ittershagen will share several time proven techniques
from the Dale Carnegie course on how to fine tune your memory skills
especially in training situations.
You will be amazed as to how Allison's memory strategies
will bring an immediate benefit to you in your next training
session. So don't forget Wednesday, October 15th, 5:30pm at
Washoe Medical, Room 108. See you there! Recent statistics show that 90% of people employed do not enjoy
their work. Further research proved that most of these professionals
were not able to use their strengths in their current field hence
the dissatisfaction.
So how do you find out what your strengths are?
The fall session consists of the foundational skills for new
trainers or trainers returning to the industry, and thus we've named
it "Survival Skills for Trainers." (Next spring we'll field a slate
of advanced classes yet to be scheduled.) In the foundational track,
students will learn about every major aspect of being a trainer,
from personal preparation to classroom management techniques. They
will walk away with the tools, the samples, the experience through
hands-on exercises and the confidence only realistic practice can
bring, preparing them for any entry level training position.
The course designers have created a thread of continuity
through each session, culminating in a capstone exercise and
certification. The intention is for students to take all classes,
each one building upon the other without significant overlap,
to get certified. This course series is for anyone thinking
about "re- tooling" themselves for today's dynamic economy,
or for trainers who have been out of the game for a time and
want to sharpen their skills before taking a new job.
